Effects of Ethephon on Maturation , Yield and Quality of Field Grown Tomatoes

Abstract
The experiments on effects of ethephon on maturity, yield and quality of three field grown tomato cultivars(Bulam Boksoo No. 2. Bulam Boksoo Large, Bokwan No. 2) were conducted during the period from March to July in 1971.
The June 17 treatment, two weeks before breaker stage, accelerated maturity by 5 days when 300ppm ethephon was applied to the whole plant of Bulam Boksoo Large, and significantly increased early yield without influencing total yield. However, it reduced the average weight of fruit.
Whole-plant sprays at any concentration to 1,500ppm ethephon was more effective in advancing maturation than flower-cluster sprays. Early yield without affecting total yield was significantly increased by 400ppm application to either the whole-plant or the flower-clusters of Bulam Boksoo Large. Total yield was significantly decreased by high concentrations (800¡1,500ppm), especially when these concentrations were applied to the whole-plant.
Three tomato cultivars applied to the whole-plant or the flower-clusters at 500ppm ethephon, showed similar reduction of maturity period. No difference in pH was observed between treated and untreated fruits, but soluble solids and titratable acidity were higher in treated fruit regardless of cultivars or methods of application.
